According to experts, regular transformer maintenance is not only a technical necessity for businesses but also a precaution that significantly reduces serious economic and safety risks:

Unplanned transformer failures can create costs serious enough to result in complete production loss in facilities. Periodic inspections make it possible to detect potential failures at an early stage.

Short circuits, insulation fluid leaks, and excessive temperature increases that may occur in transformers can bring serious safety risks such as fire and explosion. Periodic maintenance practices make a significant contribution to preventing such hazards.

Is Transformer Maintenance Mandatory?

In Türkiye, transformer maintenance and periodic inspection processes are subject to certain obligations within the framework of occupational health and safety legislation. In this context;

  • In accordance with the Regulation on Health and Safety Conditions in the Use of Work Equipment, electrical installations and equipment in workplaces must be inspected by competent persons at least once a year.
  • The Regulation on High Current Electrical Installations regulates the principles regarding the operational safety and inspection processes of high-voltage installations.

Experts state that periodic inspections of high-voltage transformers by authorized engineers are critical both for occupational safety and legal compliance.

In addition, in the event of a possible failure, fire, or damage, insurance companies request regular maintenance reports of the facility and inspections carried out within the scope of high-voltage operational responsibility. Incomplete or neglected maintenance processes directly affect compensation procedures.

At What Intervals Should Transformer Maintenance Processes Be Carried Out?

Transformer maintenance processes are not limited to a single application but consist of regular and periodic procedures planned at various stages.

Monthly Inspections (By Operating Personnel)

  • The transformer oil level should be checked regularly, and the color change of the silica gel (moisture absorber) material should be monitored to observe moisture conditions.
  • Temperature measurements and load conditions related to the transformer should be recorded regularly, and unusual increases should be considered as early warning signals.
  • The outer surface of the transformer should be carefully observed for oil leakage, looseness, corrosion, or any physical deformation, and identified nonconformities should be recorded.

Annual Periodic Maintenance (Mandatory Inspection)

This maintenance, which is legally required to be carried out at least once a year, is performed by expert engineers after the transformer is de-energized. During this process:

  • Transformer Oil Analysis: The breakdown voltage (insulation strength), moisture content, and acidity level of the oil are measured. Samples are taken for chemical analysis if necessary.
  • Insulation (Megger) Tests: Insulation resistance between windings and between windings and the body is measured.
  • Connection Inspections: Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) bushings are examined with the help of a thermal camera, and detected loose connections are tightened as necessary.
  • Protection Element Testing: The functionality of protection equipment such as the gas (Buchholz) relay, thermometer, and sudden pressure (surge) relay is tested and verified to ensure proper operation. During these inspections, the aim is to ensure the safe operation of the transformer and prevent possible damage by detecting potential failures at an early stage.

Comprehensive Maintenance Every 3–5 Years

In heavy maintenance processes planned every 3 to 5 years depending on the transformer’s age, operating conditions, and load status, more comprehensive and advanced procedures are carried out to maintain the long-term performance of the equipment. Within this scope, critical maintenance applications such as completely filtering (regenerating) the transformer oil or completely replacing it if deemed necessary, as well as renewing the bushing gaskets to guarantee the healthy operation of the insulation system, are performed. Such heavy maintenance processes increase equipment efficiency, help prevent possible failures, and contribute to extending the lifespan of the transformer.
