Why is Lighting Different in High-Rise Buildings?

The needs of an apartment building and a multi-story office tower are not the same. In high-rise buildings, lighting systems are continuously operating, heavily used, and exposed to external factors.   For example, when a fixture on the exterior façade fails, access teams, crane systems, or necessary safety precautions may be required for intervention. For this reason, in skyscrapers, the idea of “using cheap products and replacing them later” often leads to major costs. In addition, wind load increases, greater temperature differences, and more intense effects of humidity and precipitation are experienced at higher floors. Therefore, the durability of the fixtures used is much more important compared to standard projects.

What Should Be Considered When Choosing the Right Fixture?

Durability and Protection Class: Fixtures operating in outdoor environments must be resistant to water, dust, and impact. Therefore, in professional projects, products with IP65, IP66, and IP67 protection classes are preferred. These values indicate how protected the product is against outdoor conditions. In addition, stainless connections, die-cast aluminum, and UV-resistant paint technologies are used in the body structure. Because products exposed to sun, rain, and temperature changes on façades for years must not deform in a short time.

Low-Cost Lighting Solutions: The difficult maintenance conditions in high-rise buildings make long-life lighting systems a necessity. Today, LED fixtures produced according to quality standards consume less energy, generate less heat, and can operate for long periods without significant performance loss. In qualified products, the lifespan can exceed 50,000 hours. This provides a great advantage especially in façades, high-ceiling lobbies, parking areas, and technical zones.

Light Quality and Eye Comfort: A lighting system being powerful alone is not sufficient. The light must not disturb the user. Especially in office environments, reducing screen reflections, controlling glare, and ensuring homogeneous light distribution are very important. Poorly designed lighting can cause loss of concentration, headaches, eye strain, and reduced productivity. Therefore, a human-centered lighting approach is applied in modern projects.

Color Consistency: In façade applications, all lights must appear in the same tone. In low-quality products, light may differ in yellow, blue, or matte white tones. This situation may lead to more noticeable visual distortions, especially in night conditions. Therefore, in professional projects, LED systems with low color deviation are preferred.

Smart Control Systems: In new-generation high-rise buildings, lighting systems operate not manually but through automation systems. Thanks to these systems; unnecessary energy consumption can be reduced, light levels can be automatically adjusted, dimming (the process of adjusting the light intensity, brightness level, or dimness level of lighting fixtures as desired) can be carried out depending on daylight, and faults can be reported to a central system.  Especially in large office towers, these systems can provide significant energy savings.

Which Lighting Systems Are Used According to Building Sections?

Office Floors: The goal in offices is to create a balanced environment where employees can work comfortably. Therefore, low-glare LED panels, linear fixtures, and systems providing homogeneous light are used. A natural white light of around 4000K is generally preferred.

Lobbies and Entrance Areas: High-ceiling areas require strong but controlled lighting. In these areas, projectors, decorative pendant systems, and accent lighting are used. The aim is both to highlight the architecture and ensure safe visibility.

Exterior Façade Lighting: Exterior façade lighting plays a role in the building’s nighttime concept. However, the goal is not only visual appeal. Light pollution reduction, energy efficiency, and environmental comfort are also taken into consideration. For this reason, uncontrolled light emission toward the sky is not desired.
